Men's Fashion: Timeless vs. Outdated Part 1
When it comes to men's fashion, there are some things that will never go out of style, while others are best left in the past. In this blog, we'll discuss some of the timeless and outdated elements of men's fashion according to a professional tailor.
Pleats: Timeless
Pleats are small folds of fabric that are added to the front of pants, shorts, or skirts. In the past, pleated pants were considered outdated and unflattering, but now they are making a comeback in men's fashion. One reason for this is that pleats add a bit of texture and interest to the front of pants, breaking up what can be an otherwise monotonous area of fabric.
Additionally, pleats are a great way for men to experiment with different looks. While flat-front pants can look great, they can also be limiting in terms of styling options. Pleated pants, on the other hand, can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. They're versatile and can be worn with a variety of shoes, shirts, and jackets. Pleats are timeless.
High-Waisted Pants: Timeless
Another reason pleats are becoming more popular is that they can be worn with high-waisted pants, which are also making a comeback in men's fashion. High-waisted pants are a classic style that has been worn for centuries. They create a flattering silhouette by elongating the legs and cinching in the waist. High-waisted pants are a great option for men who want to add some variety to their wardrobe while still maintaining a timeless and classic look.
While I typically opt for a mid-rise nowadays I do believe pleats and high-waisted pants are two elements of men's fashion that are making a comeback and are likely to remain in style for the next decade or two. Whether you're dressing up for a formal event or just want to add some variety to your everyday wardrobe, pleats and high-waisted pants are great options to consider.
Slim Lapels: Outdated
Slim lapels were all the rage in the early 2000s, but as the fashion world has evolved, so has our sense of style. Nowadays, the slim lapel is considered dated, and many men are opting for a more moderate and classic approach. A suit with a classic lapel not only looks sleek and sophisticated but also gives off a timeless vibe that never goes out of style.
My recommendation is to ditch the slim lapels and opt for a more classic and moderate approach. Not only will this keep you looking sharp and stylish, but it will also save you from having to constantly update your wardrobe to keep up with ever-changing fashion trends.
Full Windsor Knots: Outdated
When it comes to neckties, it's important to stay up to date with current fashion trends. The full Windsor knot used to be popular, but it's been out of style for a while now. I recommend avoiding this knot if you want to stay stylish and modern. Instead, go for medium-sized ties with a four-in-hand knot (or double four-in-hand). This knot is simple to tie and looks great with a variety of shirt and jacket styles. It's also a more versatile and modern look, perfect for the office or a night out.
Another trend that's no longer fashionable is shiny ties. These ties were popular in the 90s and early 2000s, but they're now considered outdated. I recommend choosing ties made from matte materials, such as wool or silk blends. These ties have a more sophisticated and refined look that complements modern fashion styles. They also add texture and depth to your outfit.
When choosing a tie, keep it simple and classic. Avoid flashy patterns or overly bright colors, and stick to neutral colors like navy, burgundy, or gray. These colors can easily match any outfit and are timeless. If you do choose a patterned tie, make sure it's subtle and not too busy. A subtle pattern can add interest to your outfit without being too distracting.
Men’s fashion is always changing, but some elements remain timeless while others are best left in the past. Pleats, and high-waisted pants, are making a comeback and are now considered cool, while slim lapels, and full Windsor knots, are outdated. When in doubt, go for something classic and timeless that will never go out of style. Part 2 of this series will be posted next week!
